Harris signs forms to officially declare candidacy

Vice President Harris said she has signed forms to officially declare her presidential candidacy in a post on the social platform X on Friday.

“Today, I signed the forms officially declaring my candidacy for President of the United States,” Harris said in her post. “I will work hard to earn every vote. And in November, our people-powered campaign will win.”

Harris has become the likely Democratic presidential nominee in a whirlwind week following President Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and endorse her.

Since that Sunday announcement, Harris has quickly snapped up key endorsements from those in her party and massive amounts of fundraising.

Both former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama officially endorsed Harris Friday. The vice president’s campaign released a video featuring a phone call between Harris and the Obamas titled “Endorsement.”

“We called to say, Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” Obama said in the video.

If elected to the presidency, Harris would be the first woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the office. Despite the new energy and excitement that her campaign has brought to Democrats, Harris still faces a tough climb in the race against former President Trump if she is her party’s nominee.

A set of Fox News polls released Friday found Harris neck-and-neck with the former president in the key swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, with her tied with the former president in the first two states and down 1 point in the latter.

According to an average of national polls by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Harris is 2.1 points behind Trump, with the vice president garnering 45.9 percent support to the former president’s 48.0 percent.
