Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer highlights Keanu Reeves as new nemesis Shadow

What just happened? Paramount Pictures has published the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a direct sequel to 2022’s Sonic movie and the third entry in what’s been one of the better video game film adaptations in recent memory.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will see best buds Sonic and Tails team up with Knuckles the Echidna and an unlikely ally – Dr. Robotnik – to take on a new enemy with unrivaled powers, Shadow the Hedgehog.

Robotnik is down on his luck following failures encountered with the blue hedgehog in the previous two films, but it doe not take much convincing from Sonic and company to get him back to his old form. “If I can’t rule the world, I might as well save it,” a refocused Robotnik exclaims.

Shadow the Hedgehog is voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves, one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors. His involvement with the film, as well as Jim Carrey’s reprisal as Dr. Robotnik following talk of retirement from acting, will surely put butts in seats. And what should we make of Robotnik’s father appearing at the end of the trailer? Can Robotnik himself even be trusted?

The first Sonic movie arrived in 2020, and many expected it to flop following the animation fiasco leading up to its release. Fortunately, the movie’s director took the criticism in stride and announced a three-month delay to give Sonic a makeover. In the end, it all worked out and Sonic brought in more than $320 million at the box office.

The follow-up did even better, betting $405 million in ticket sales en route to the best opening weekend for a video game movie up to that point (The Super Mario Bros. Movie would smash that record in April 2023 with a worldwide haul of $1.36 billion). It did not take long for Paramount to approve a third movie in the series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is due out in theaters on December 20, 2024.
