The Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 8 Recap

The Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 8 Recap

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from Monday’s episode of The Bachelorette.

We’re coming down to the wire on The Bachelorette, as Jenn Tran barrels toward a potential engagement with one of her three remaining suitors.

This week’s cold open shows there may be some trouble in paradise, as Devin is spiraling a bit over where he stands with Jenn. But, all will reveal itself in due time, and we must make it through fantasy suites to find out what’s plaguing Devin.

The group is in Hawai’i, and Jenn is very nervous yet excited about fantasy suites. Molly Mesnick returns to give Jenn some advice after she and Jason helped facilitate the radio date in Seattle that ended with Sam M’s elimination. She tells Jenn this is week was the most important of her entire experience dating Jason, because it allows for dedicated alone time to have the deeper conversations that are necessary before an engagement.

Jenn says she’s as ready as she can be for an engagement, though she’s going to need some reassurance from her men.

Up first is Devin, who has already told Jenn that he loves her and is waiting for her to say it back. They take a helicopter ride around the island before landing near a waterfall, where they enjoy a bottle of champagne while they chat about their relationship. Devin tells Jenn that he is looking forward to what their relationship could be outside of production, and being around his family during hometowns just made him want to make it to that point with her even more.

Despite all the talk of the future, Jenn still keeps her feelings close to her chest, saying that she still finds it difficult to allow herself to accept a good thing and not second guess it. Devin promises he’ll be there waiting when she is ready to take the leap, but at dinner he presses her a bit more. She explains that she never really thought of herself as someone who would self sabotage, but she thinks she’s just never had the opportunity to because her previous relationships were so bad. Now that she’s dating Devin, she’s scared things are going too well and she can sense herself wanting to pull away.

This leaves the two in a bit of an uncertain place, as Devin tries to be patient even though he’s clearly ahead of Jenn in terms of his feelings. Devin tells Jenn he is ready to propose, and she invites him to the fantasy suite.

The next morning, they seem very happy as Jenn says she’s one step closer to accepting this relationship for what it is. Devin is still feeling insecure about the fact that Jenn won’t say for certain that she loves him.

Jenn is off to her date with Jonathan, though, so Devin is left alone to ponder that on his own.

Jenn and Jonathan spend the day wandering around the island on a very casual date that includes trying new foods and shopping at some local markets. They also have a picnic at yet another waterfall, and Jonathan says he’s trying to open up more and be honest about his feelings. He’s finding it difficult, but he knows that it’s now or never. Both of them remain reserved during the daytime portion of the date but are hoping dinner will bring clarity.

During dinner, Jenn tells Jonathan that his hometown date made her much more confident in their relationship, because she was able to see what they thought about how he moved in the relationship. They relate to each other on the idea of finding it hard to trust oneself and truly know who they are and what they want, and Jonathan admits that he is falling for her, which is scary but welcome. He also says he can see himself proposing.

Then, they’re off to the fantasy suite. The next morning, the happy couple enjoys some last minute alone time but, meanwhile, Devin is still feeling uncertain and anxious about where he stands with Jenn.

Last but not least, it’s time for Jenn and Marcus get their own date. Before meeting with Jenn, Marcus opens up to Jesse about his feelings. He says he thinks Jenn is a bit ahead of him, and he’s trying to meet her where she’s at because he doesn’t want to miss out on something great because he’s holding himself back. He wants to use this day to realize if Jenn is his person.

To her credit, Jenn says in confessional that she also thinks Marcus is not in the same place that she is, but she is hopeful he will get there.

The pair spend the day on a boat, sailing around the island, before stopping for a sunset swim with some manta rays. During the date, Jenn tells Marcus how much she enjoyed visiting his friends and sister, though she was nervous that it went so well because she knew that would only make her feelings for him grow — and his may not follow suit. He does say he feels closer to her than he has to anyone in a long time.

At dinner, Marcus opens up more, admitting that the last rose ceremony was hard, because his name was called last. Up until that moment, he’d felt very confident about their connection, but that was when he realized that their future together isn’t a given. He takes an engagement very seriously, especially given his difficult upbringing, but he is hopeful about his and Jenn’s potential. He also tells her that he isn’t in love with her yet, and he’s nervous that she will decide she’d rather be with someone whose feelings are clearer.

Jenn tells Marcus that she is in love with him, and she doesn’t need him to match that energy quite yet, but she wants to be honest about where she’s at. They are both willing to find peace in that, for now, and that’s where the conversation ends (at least on camera), because the pair agree to a fantasy suite.

The morning brings some clarity, but not totally. Marcus says that every time he gets to spend more time with Jenn, he feels even stronger about her, and he’s leaving the fantasy suite more confident than ever that their relationship can get to the next level. But Jenn is still worried about moving forward knowing that he’s not completely there yet.

Devin, on the other hand, is starting to realize he certainly can’t continue without some reassurance from Jenn. He meets with Jesse to discuss his feelings and, after a long conversation, he decides that he needs to know where Jenn is at.

In the final moments of the episode, Devin gets off the hotel elevator, ready to confront Jenn with these feelings.

Luckily, audiences only have to wait one day to find out what happens, as The Bachelorette: Men Tell All airs Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
